EXPRESS ENTRY

Express Entry has become the main driver of skilled worker immigration to Canada and one of the most popular immigration systems globally. Under Express Entry, individuals and families wishing to settle in Canada can become new permanent residents within just a few months.

Every year Canada welcomes thousands of skilled workers in all types of occupations. Workers that have in-demand skills can apply direct from overseas. You may also arrive as a Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) or as a Student that gains his/her work experience after graduation. No matter how you do it, it is important to understand your options and create a plan that gives you the best opportunity for success.

How does Express Entry work?

Express Entry is Canada’s flagship application management system that was developed to replace paper-based applications to improve the speed of processing thousands of applications for permanent residence from skilled workers.

There are 3 major Canadian economic immigration programs that are managed through the Express Entry system:
1
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
2
Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
3
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

While the requirements for each program are different, candidates with university or college degrees with skilled work experience and moderate proficiency in English and/or French are ideal applicants.

Application Process

Applying to Express Entry is a two-step process. The first step is to submit your Express Entry profile following which you get automatically assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score and, if you meet the requirements, are put in a pool of candidates for immigration..

The Express Entry pool is using a points-based system. Your CRS score is based on the information you provide when submitting the online profile. You may make changes/updates to your expression of interest while it is in the Express Entry pool. According to the changes/updates the number of points assigned to you under the Comprehensive Ranking System will be recalculated.

Approximately every two weeks Immigration Refugees and Citizenship of Canada holds draws and issues a number of invitations. The highest-ranking candidates from the pool will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence – step 2 of the application process. If you are invited to apply for permanent residence, you will need to show proof that the information you provided on your Express Entry profile was correct.

Providing false information on an immigration application is a serious offense. If a person is caught doing this they may be charged with misrepresentation, resulting in a 5-year ban from submitting any applications for Canadian immigration.

Your Express Entry invitation to apply is valid for 60 days. According to IRCC, 80% of the applications are processed within 6 months of submission. Check your account regularly to see if any messages or updates have been issued. If the application is approved, then the applicant and all accompanying family members will be issued travel visas authorizing travel to a Canadian Port of Entry (POE) where they can obtain official permanent residency documents!
